About

Vazio S/A

Vazio S/A Architecture and Urbanism combines architectural practice with research into urban voids.

We adopt a proactive and passive approach: viewing informality, urban voids and the market as sources that can point us towards new projects and opportunities. Alongside a conventional architectural practice (detached houses, commercial premises, cultural buildings, urban design, etc.), we engage in experimentation through architectural competitions, publications, partnerships with social and artistic groups, and ephemeral urban interventions that propose new relationships between contemporary culture and architecture. Our fundamental premise is that architecture is a matter of public concern and a tool with both social and artistic dimensions.

From our offices based in Belo Horizonte and Porto, we have already led projects in locations as diverse as Porto, Ponte de Lima, Lisbon, Quebec, London, the Loire Valley, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Mumbai. Among our most recent projects are the Maiolino-Moraleida Pavilion at the Instituto Paz (Brumadinho, Brazil), the house in Aldeia do Meco (Portugal), the refurbishment of the Pezzi Building (Belo Horizonte), the National Bahá’í Temple (Brasília) and the Tilândsias Oníricas garden in Ponte de Lima (Portugal).

Vazio S/A has received numerous national and international awards, including the influential Architectural Review Emerging Architecture Award, and has participated in major art and architecture exhibitions, such as the Venice International Architecture Biennale and the São Paulo International Art Biennial.

The studio was founded by the architect Carlos M Teixeira in 2002. A graduate of EA-UFMG in Belo Horizonte, Carlos holds a master’s degree in urban planning (with distinction) from the Architectural Association in London and is a PhD candidate at FAUP in Porto, Portugal. He has published a series of books on architecture, including the acclaimed Under Construction: History of the Void in BH (1st edition: Cosac Naify 1999, 2nd edition: Romano Guerra 2022), Entre (Black Dog Publishing, 2012), Ode to the Void (Nhamérica/Romano Guerra, 2017), and is one of the editors of Collateral Spaces (Cidades Criativas, 2008). He is a member of the Portuguese Institute of Architects (OA, Portugal) and the Brazilian Council of Architecture and Urbanism (CAU, Brazil).
