The Vila del Rey house, designed by Vazio S/A and built in 2001 (click here), recently underwent an addition at the request of its current owner, American drummer Jimmy Duchowny.

Jimmy frequently hosts jazz concerts at his home, which proved to be incredibly adaptable for this new use. However, the garden was poorly lit and needed a new lighting concept.

Our proposal defines two lighting themes: 1) markers that illuminate the floor of the long pedestrian path; and 2) lighting directed at the treetops that amplifies the notion of depth in the space and explores the texture of the branches and treetops.

The light illuminates the floor and ceiling, leaving the undergrowth and the entire mid-height of the garden in semi-darkness. The effect is a night garden in two layers: floor and dossal, or a visitor path indirectly illuminated by the tree canopy.

The stainless steel pieces, specially designed to respond to this concept, use trees as support and serve as a base for LED projectors. Always above the observer’s level, they thus avoid glare and focus the light on the main element of the garden: the dossal.
