Drawing from the radically artificial topography of open-pit mining, this project proposes a center of environmental education inside the quarry of a mining company located at the foothills of Serra do Curral, in Belo Horizonte. The design looks into the occupation potential of this sculptural void and, instead of accusing it, ends up praising it as an opportunity to reclaim both the environment and the pit’s negative space. The project is part of a larger urban operation that encompasses a slum, a listed ridge ( Serra do Curral), a change in the FAR (floor area ratio) of the area, and the corresponding counterparts.
