The Carandiru Complex, once the largest prison in Latin America, was converted into an urban park. The design submitted to this national competition departs from a very rare Atlantic forest remnant inside the Complex. From this spot onward, the design strategy establishes a smattering of landscaped clusters, each with a different character. Through their contrast with the original (or natural) forest fragment, the clusters bring about a pluralistic landscaping approach to São Paulo’s essentially urban vegetation – hence the grass fragment, weeds fragment, urban trees fragment, the ornamental plants fragment, and so on.
