Void possibilities: Hong Kong’s in-between – Vazio S/A
Void possibilities: Hong Kong’s in-between
Void possibilities: Hong Kong’s in-between

Among the many wastelands of Hong Kong are the pedestrian alleyways squeezed between 50-story buildings. Hong Kong is as overwhelming as sweeping; its vertical mass scattered across the mountains gives us the image of a monstrous, inhuman and fascinating city. But this density also offers us a world of unexpected solutions. Less regulated and less barren than official public spaces, these pedestrian paths are unplanned intermediate spaces that function as important buffer zones throughout the city, offering a range of neighborhood services and resting places for the hectic frenetic pace on the streets and avenues. Versatile, they expand and retract according to the time of day and the season. Located all over the city in a parallel network of interstitial voids, they affect everyday life, the people’s perceptions and the hongkongers’ sense of community.
